2023 White Sulphur Spring’s Election

Positions open within county seat to be decided upon soon.

In the early months of 2023, White Sulphur Spring’s citizens were informed of open positions for city office. These positions included two open seats on the White Sulphur Spring’s City Council that will be decided on in this year’s election cycle. Both seats for the positions are that of a four year long term. Currently, one seat is filled by Rick Ellison. Ellison was elected in 2021 during a time where the position was unexpired. In addition to Ellison, the other position is held by Lee Blanchard. Who, similarly to the other seat, was appointed to hold the position in 2021. Candidate filing for both seats opened all the way back in the month of April. The filing period was then open for approximately two months before closing officially at five pm on Monday, June 19. The seats to be voted on were designated to be “at large.” This means that candidates for the position are appointed to be representatives for the whole population of White Sulphur Spring’s citizens while holding the position and performing their outlined duties. Citizens of the White Sulphur Spring’s area will soon have the opportunity to vote for who they wish to fill the two positions on the city council. This will be voted upon via general election in less than a month’s time. A primary election was not needed to narrow down the number of candidates for the two positions this cycle. Ballots are to be circulated via mail to all registered voters within White Sulphur Springs next Friday, October 20. The election is set to be held on Tuesday, November 7, which is the designated election day for local municipal positions within the state of Montana. Within the span between when ballots are sent out and the official Election Day, county election administrators must complete several tasks to ensure the validity of the election and its process, as well as effectively informing populations of where and how to vote. For example, the Montana Secretary of State website notes that election administrators must create a diagram and a statement pertaining to election locations and, in addition, specific instructions on the voting process. Any White Sulphur Spring’s residents who may need assistance or issues with ballots may contact the Election Office by calling 406-547-3022or visiting their office at the Meagher County Court House on Main Street of White Sulphur Springs.
