Hornets Take Tournament By Storm

Volleyball team dominates first day of district tournament.

After a remarkable season of volleyball, the Lady Hornets were able to enter the District 12C tournament as the #2 seed. The Hornets were only placed second to the powerhouse Manhattan Christian Eagles. The Lady Hornets began their tournament run today at the Manhattan Christian Memorial Events Center and will fight until Saturday to gain a spot at the Divisional Tournament. The Hornets kicked off their day of victory with a game against #7 ranked Sheridan Panthers at 1:00. The Lady Hornets took down the Sheridan Panthers just last week, and made a repeat showing with a quick three match win. The match scores were as follows: 25-8, 25-12, and 25-9. All players contributed well in the game, and individual stat highlights are as shown below: Kills: -Natalie Fisher showed out with 7 kills. -Jules Feddes and Kendra Manger were yet again large contributors with 5 kills each. Assists: -Mikayla Teter showed off her impressive setting skills with 16 assists. Aces: -Natalie Fisher contributed with 5 aces total. -Jules Feddes pitched in with 4 aces. -Kendra Manger and Mikayla Teter handed in their donation to the victory with 2 aces each. Digs: -Angel McDanel tallied in at 7 total digs to be a powerful defensive player. -Natalie Fisher again exhibited her abilities as a well rounded player to have 5 digs. Blocks: -In the short game, Natalie Fisher acquired 2 blocks to be an excellent defensive player. The Lady Hornets did not have much downtime following their first victory. The team’s next game was only a few hours later, and the ladies did not show any signs of tiredness despite the quick turnaround. The Lady Hornets dominated the #3 seed of the Gardiner Bruins. The volleyball team started off with a win of 25-18, kept the ball rolling to victory with a second match of 25-21, and finished out the game strong with a score of 25-17. Team stats for the game against the Bruins are as follows: Kills: -Continuing her momentum from the first game, Natalie Fisher was able to earn a total of 7 kills. -Kendra Manger followed in suite with 6 impressive kills. -Jules Fisher gave a handy contribution of 5 kills. Assists: -With two more than the first game, Setter Mikayla Teter amassed a remarkable 18 assists in the quick victory. Aces: -Mikayla Teter also showcased her serving abilities with 3 aces. -Seniors Cadie Larson and Kendra Manger showed out in their last high school volleyball tournament with 2 aces apiece. Digs: -Kendra Manger exhibited her influential defensive abilities with an influential 16 digs. -Jules Feddes highlighted her well-rounded skills with 8 impressive digs. -Vickie Massee and Mikayla Teter added into the Hornets’ win with 7 digs each. Blocks: -Natalie Fisher was a force at the net with 4 digs. -Jules Fisher, Kendra Manger, and Mikayla Teter all chipped in with 1 block apiece. Following what can only be described as a triumphant day, Coach Marteen Taylor was able to give insight into the wins and how the Lady Hornets are strategizing for the rest of the tournament. Coach Taylor stated, “The girls took care of business today. We need to step up our offense and continue playing tough defense tomorrow to get by Manhattan Christian. Looking forward to seeing them again. We always play our best when we play tough teams.” No matter the outcome of the ladies’ next game, the Hornet Volleyball team will have at least one other game to play in the double elimination tournament. The Lady Hornets will go head-to-head with the #1 ranked Manhattan Christian Eagles tomorrow, October 27 at 11 am in the Manhattan Christian Memorial Event Center.
